Fiber Optic Pigtails

Fiber optic pigtails are particularly common in passive enclosure technology. Whenever connector installation is difficult due to dust or dirt (for example, on construction sites), fiber optic pigtails are the ideal and simple installation solution.

Features of the Pigtail

  • Pigtails are 900µm fiber optic cables pre-terminated on one end, which can be connected to an existing optical fiber using a splice.
  • A pigtail is designed for connecting and coupling optical components. A fiber optic connector is already attached to the fiber during manufacturing.
  • Fiber optic pigtails can be either multimode or single-mode optical fibers, consisting of a single fiber. This fiber is exposed on the unterminated, connector-less end.
  • Pigtails can have between 1 and 48 fibers (strand counts) (1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, and 48)

Fiber Optic Pigtails – Different Types

There are various types of optical connectors: LC pigtails, SC pigtails, and ST pigtails; other connectors are also available. These fiber optic pigtails can be categorized as single-mode (typically with a yellow jacket) and multimode (typically with an orange jacket).

Depending on the cable connector used on the fibre optic pigtail, a distinction is also made between LC pigtails, SC pigtails, ST pigtails, FC pigtails, MT-RJ pigtails, E2000 pigtails and others. Each connector, or rather each type of fibre optic pigtail, offers different advantages and has its own specific areas of application. The most popular fibre optic pigtails are:

The most popular fibre optic pigtails are:

  • LC fibre optic pigtails: for a wide range of applications
  • SC fibre optic pigtails: for applications such as CATV, LAN, WAN, testing and measurement.
  • FC fibre optic pigtails: suitable for general applications.
  • ST fibre optic pigtails: particularly commonly used for fibre optic LAN applications (multimode). This version is used in industry, medicine, sensor technology and telecommunications.

Fibre optic pigtails can also be used in challenging environments

There are special fibre optic pigtails designed for particularly extreme environments. Versions such as waterproof or armoured fibre optic pigtails are specifically designed for this purpose. Armoured pigtails, for example, offer high protection against rodents, whilst waterproof pigtails (usually additionally armoured) can be used for military purposes or on communication towers.

Attaching the fibre optic pigtail – splicing

Unlike a ‘fast connector’, splicing is required to join the fibre optic cable. In this process, the fibre is melted using a splicing machine and then firmly joined to the other end. The process is generally quite straightforward to carry out, but requires specialist knowledge and expensive equipment. When splicing the fibre optic pigtail, the unterminated end is permanently joined to the fibre of the installation cable and then placed in a splice tray for protection.
