Singlemode cables for wide area networks
As an electrician and IT employee, you will find a large selection of multimode and singlemode cables in our store, which you can use primarily for setting up your high-performance networks. Please note that multimode (OM) cables are suitable for local area networks (LAN) and singlemode cables (OS) are used for wide area networks (WAN).Singlemode cables - properties
OS2 is the official abbreviation for singlemode cables. They offer the greatest scope in terms of data rates and distances. In addition, singlemode fibers can also be used for multiplex operation, meaning that up to 16 separate data connections are possible with our products via a duplex connection, for example, whereby these must also travel at different data rates.Unterkategorien
Singlemode cables and multimode cables – differences
There are a few differences between the two popular cable types, which you will find in our wide selection, that you should consider when making your choice – or that will help you to distinguish between existing cables:
Diameter of the glass fibre core:
- OM1 Multimode: 62.5 µm
- OM2/OM3/OM4/OM5 Multimode: 50 µm
- OS2 Singlemode: 9 µm
Data transmission:
Range and attenuation vary depending on the wavelength. In addition, a smaller core results in lower attenuation losses. The OM multimode cable is more prone to noise than the OS singlemode cable.
Possible applications:
- OM: Between 100 and 1000 metres, focus on building cabling
- OS: Up to 120 km (without additional equipment), ideal for networking different locations of two companies or the company to the data centre
Colour:
- OS2: Usually yellow
- OM2: Usually orange
- OM3: Usually turquoise
- OM4: Usually erica-colour
- OM5: Usually light green
Joint operation of singlemode cables and multimode cables
When planning a network, you must ensure that you lay a multi-fibre singlemode or multimode cable in every room where you need an IT connection, matching the existing cables. This is important because it is not possible to connect singlemode cables and multimode cables directly.

Frequently asked questions
Since the two fibre optic cables cannot be spliced or connected directly in the in-house cabling, you must take suitable cable routes into account when planning the network. However, media converters are available for signal conversion for retrofitting. Such converters are also available for copper-based Internet (for converting the copper connection into light signals for use with fibre optic cables).
All singlemode cables are available in various lengths from 0.5 m to approximately 50 m and are terminated at both ends. They are individually packaged and come with a measurement report. The cables can be ordered in units of 1, 5, 10, 50 or 100 pieces. Please note the specifications given in the description.
In order to install cables correctly, cable management products and other ancillary items are important and frequently requested by our customers.
We therefore offer accessories such as:
- Fibre optic adapters, attenuators, dust caps, connectors,
- as well as fibre optic cleaning tools and fibre optic assembly tools,
- cable management accessories (patch panels, cable guides, etc.)
- and new and exotic items in our clearance section.
