Fiber Optic Wall Boxes
Splice box / fibre-optic wall box
Splice boxes are available in various designs for indoor or outdoor use. Any variant capable of accommodating fibre splices is referred to as a splice box or fibre-optic wall box. Depending on the design, the splice box can accommodate between 12 and 48 adaptors and a correspondingly high number of fibres.
Structure of the splice box
The housing of a splice box may contain one or more splice cassettes, in which the splices (crimp or heat-shrink splices) are housed. The front panel of the splice box features various connectors to which patch cables can be connected. The splice cassette and the front panel can be removed for ease of use. This is necessary, for example, when splicing pigtails.
Advantages of splice boxes
Splice boxes are cost-effective and well-equipped. For example, splice boxes for DIN rails already include adaptors, strain relief and splice holders. The lockable wall-mounted box for indoor use, on the other hand, comes with cable ties, mounting materials, sealing tape and kink protection sleeves for the patch cables, as well as heat-shrink splice protection and numbered labels for marking the adaptors.
Further advantages of a splice box include:
- Easy installation
- Optimal protection of the optical fibres against environmental influences
- Clear arrangement of the splices
- Protection against unauthorised access thanks to the lockable design

Frequently asked questions
The optical fibres are spliced using an arc splicer. After the fibres have been aligned, the two ends of each individual fibre are precisely fused together. These finished splices are stored in the splice box.
This version is particularly suitable for industrial use and is very popular with our customers. The splice box, which accommodates up to 12 fibres, allows you to work in the smallest of spaces. Strain relief and splice holders are already integrated and suitable for metal crimp splices. The robust box is designed for pre-terminated cables or pigtails. With an operating temperature range of -40°C to 60°C, it is suitable for use in a wide variety of locations.
FTTH stands for ‘Fibre to the Home’ and refers to a fibre-optic connection to the home. Deutsche Telekom, for example, uses the FTTH wall box to connect to the local access networks, which ensure a particularly reliable and fast internet connection with high bandwidth. Telekom’s fibre-optic network can achieve download speeds of up to 1,000 Mbit/s.
