19" Patch Panels

Fibre-optic patch panel

The fibre-optic patch panel is also known as a patch panel or distribution panel and serves as a connection point for cables. It is used in small networks as well as in data centres and businesses (in network or server cabinets). The fibre-optic patch panel is easy to use, as once it has been installed in the data cabinets, the patch cables can be conveniently plugged in at the front.

Fibre-optic patch panels – models

Fibre-optic patch panels in the 19-inch format are typically very popular, as this size fits well into server cabinets. There are several ports (usually 12 or 24) available for connecting the patch cables. Depending on the type of connector or adapter used, this allows for a varying number of connections per height unit (1U). Our standard (empty) patch panels can be configured in different ways in this respect.

In our shop, you can also order a pre-assembled 19-inch patch panel that is already fitted with adaptors and can be customised to your requirements. For example, our patch panels can also be fitted with fibre-optic pigtails. Simply get in touch if you require specific types of adaptors or pre-assembled equipment for your patch panel.

Our recommendation: a 19-inch patch panel fitted with 12 adaptors, pull-out type, or 19-inch fibre-optic patch panel fitted with 24 adaptors, pull-out type..

The difference between a fibre-optic patch panel and a switch

Both fibre-optic patch panels and network switches are used, particularly when setting up smaller networks – but what is the difference between the two? Visually, they look similar, but their functions are different.

Fibre-optic patch panel:

  • passive network component
  • requires no power
  • connects fixed cabling (network installation cables) to flexible cabling (patch cables)
  • Network devices can be connected via the sockets using patch cables.

Switch:

  • active network component
  • requires power
  • does not have connectors for network cabling, but instead features RJ-45 sockets or, via transceivers, fibre-optic connectors for connecting patch cables
  • A network switch connects all devices to one another and enables them to communicate with each other

Frequently asked questions

For the professional installation of a network within a company, there are reputable firms available to install a patch panel tailored to your specific requirements. Easy-to-use 19-inch panels that support CAT/network cabling and comply with the TIA 568A and TIA 568B connection standards are ideal. A robust metal housing and an earthing cable are essential for safety. Our patch panels can also be fitted with a wide range of fibre-optic adaptors.

There are generally two methods of cable management: horizontal and vertical cable management. Horizontal cable management is primarily used to provide a route for patch cables. Vertical cable management often involves the use of a 3-inch D-ring with a vertical plastic cable manager, which optimally ensures the correct bend radius of the cable and an organised cabling system.

Installation begins with good planning. Determine in advance exactly what the rack height and layout will be, and how much space you have available. Please note that you must not mix different types of fibre-optic cables. A patch panel can certainly be fitted with different types of fibre-optic cable. In this case, you must select the appropriate adaptors so that you can identify the type of cable connected to each port from the outside, even when the patch panel is still sealed. Determine where the accessories are to be fitted. It is best to use a true-to-scale drawing and check that all components are present before starting the installation.
