Multimode SFP transceiver properties
An SFP transceiver module functions simultaneously as a transmitter and receiver and is used to connect different devices to each other. To do this, the transceivers are inserted into their counterpart (the SFP slot).
The SFP is a standardised transceiver that is suitable not only for multimode but also for singlemode networks, depending on the model selected. LC connectors are most commonly used for the connection.
The SFP is available in different classes with different data rates:
- SFP / up to 4.25 GBit/s
- SFP+ / up to 14.025 GBit/s
- SFP28 / up to 25GBit/s
Multimode SFP and QSFP – Differences/h2>
Unlike SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable), QSFP (Quad Form-factor Pluggable) is designed to support four independent channels simultaneously. Here, too, you can connect single-mode and multimode fibres at the same time, depending on the model. Data transmission can be carried out individually or in bundles:
- QSFP / 4 x 1.25 Gbit/s
- QSFP+ / 4 x 10 Gbit/s
- QSFP28 / 4 x 25 Gbit/s
- QSFP-DD / 4 x 100 Gbit/s

This gives you an excellent transceiver that is suitable for both 400 Gigabit Ethernet and data centres. It is, of course, hot-pluggable and RoHS 2011/65/EU compliant. It can be used in a temperature range from 0°C to 70°C and can work with multimode OM3, OM4 and OM5 multimode fibre.
Easy maintenance of multimode SFP
To ensure that you can use the transceivers for as long as possible and that data transmission is of high quality, regular cleaning and maintenance of the parts is recommended. You can ensure careful handling of the multimode SFPs by keeping the front of the optical connection free of dirt and dust, avoiding scratches and always inserting the module carefully. You should also ensure that the ambient temperature/humidity is kept at a normal and consistent level.

Frequently asked questions
Both SFP and QSFP transceivers can connect multimode and singlemode. You can normally use an SFP module with an LC port and a QSFP module with an LC port or MPO port. There are also GBIC transceivers that are used with SC connectors.
Although SFP and SFP+ modules are the same size, the transceiver must be selected according to the device in which it is to be used. QSFP ports are generally backward compatible, which is why a QSFP module also works on a QSFP28 port. However, QSFP and SFP are not compatible with each other.
Due to the wide range of SFP modules available, you can find the optimal solution for every application. One of the most common uses is certainly in the field of Ethernet. You must therefore pay attention to the compatibility of the cable types (single-mode/multi-mode) and the appropriate data rate. It is also helpful to choose an SFP with hot-swap capability, as this allows you to replace the module without switching off the hardware.
