Singlemode solutions from Fiber24: Comprehensive and modern

Discover our diverse selection of singlemode transceiver modules, which have been specially developed for long-lasting, reliable and powerful fibre optic communication. Whether for use in data centres, telecommunications networks, such as FTTH installations or corporate networks, our modules offer the right solution for different requirements in terms of speed, distance and connection type.

Our singlemode range includes a variety of form factors:

  • SFP: Flexible and versatile, ideal for speeds from 100 Mbit/s to 4.25 Gbit/s, with various connector types such as LC.
  • SFP+: For higher speeds from 8.5 Gbit/s to 10.3 Gbit/s, perfect for demanding applications.
  • SFP28 (25G): Compact for speeds of 25 Gbit/s, ideally suited for modern network and data centre environments.
  • QSFP: For high speeds from 40 Gbit/s to 200 Gbit/s, suitable for large amounts of data.
  • QSFP28 (100G): High-speed connections of 100 Gbit/s, reliable and efficient data transmission.
  • QSFP-DD: For 400 Gbit/s and up to 800 Gbit/s, suitable for data centres and backbone networks with high requirements.
  • OSFP: For 400 Gbit/s and 800 Gbit/s, extremely fast for maximum bandwidth and future-proofing.

Singlemode transceivers: These are the areas of application

The increasing expansion of fiber optic networks is also driving up demand for flexible solutions that provide optimal connections between different sections (e.g., to the home or within the building to the computer). Singlemode SFP transceivers are the ideal solution because they are flexible in use. They enable network connections at Gbit/s speeds and can therefore also be used for longer distances. Singlemode modules can even be used in high-speed networks. Thanks to their hot-swap capability, they can be replaced without shutting down the hardware..

How singlemode and multimode differ from each other

In addition to singlemode products, we also offer multimode transceivers, but what are the differences between them? The core of singlemode fiber is particularly small, which means that the laser's transmission path is also very narrow. As a result, singlemode fibers can achieve much higher bandwidths and longer transmission distances than multimode fibers. They primarily operate in the wavelengths 1310 nm and 1550 nm and others (1270 nm to 1610 nm) and can be used for distances between 0.5 m and 160 km.

Did you know? In contrast, multimode fiber, with its larger core and longer wavelength, is more sensitive and is only used for data transmission over short distances. However, it is often cheaper than singlemode fiber and is therefore ideal when only short distances need to be bridged in networks.

Singlemode – Why color coding is useful

The wavelengths of singlemode SFPs can usually be distinguished by the color coding of the latch and pull tab:

  • 1310 nm – blue
  • 1550 nm – yellow
  • 1490 nm – purple
  • and others depending on the wavelength

However, we also offer green SFP and orange-colored BIDI. The color may vary (depending on the wavelengths used). It should also be noted that BiDi are used in pairs in opposite directions for the application. Please refer to the respective product specifications in the article description.

Frequently asked questions

Singlemode and multimode are not compatible with each other. Due to the different wavelengths, laser sources and core sizes, data transmission between single-mode and multi-mode cannot be achieved. However, this problem can be easily solved, as Media Converters can be used to connect different types, wavelengths and distances. They are a great help when expanding existing networks.

The main purpose for using singlemode is data transmission over long distances. Distances of 160 km are no problem at all. Even longer distances are possible, but the signal must be amplified additionally. For this reason, singlemode is ideal for WAN applications (Wide Area Networks)

Fibre optic connections (FTTH) are usually implemented in singlemode.

While there are five types of multimode fibre optic cable, there are only two types of singlemode fibre optic cable. OS1 is a type of fibre that is now only found in old existing networks in Europe. OS2 is used in all applications and can be used for distances of up to 200 km. This solution is therefore characterised by a high degree of flexibility and is suitable for a variety of applications.
