Media Converters

Media converters for connecting different types of cables

Media converters (fibre optic converters) are designed to connect different transmission media in a straightforward manner. For example, these converters can be used to connect copper cables to fibre optic networks. This is also the most common application.

Our media converters

With our high-quality converters, you have every option available to connect different types of ports.

These flexible converters are suitable for the following conversions, for example:

  • Fibre-to-copper or copper-to-fibre
  • Fibre-to-fibre connections with different wavelengths
  • Connecting multimode to singlemode
  • Connecting two singlemode networks
  • Converting duplex to simplex connections

We have the right media converter for every conversion requirement, whether it concerns speed, cable type, operating mode or protocols. We also stock mounting chassis for mini converters, which are suitable for installation in a 19-inch rack.

Advantages of media converters

By using the right converter, you can enjoy a range of benefits for your network:

  • Easy installation of Wi-Fi access points or IP cameras via PoE. This provides a cost-effective extension for all PoE devices, such as IP phones, IP cameras, Wi-Fi devices or video conferencing equipment. At the same time, this allows for an extension of the network range.
  • Migration without significant time or cost. The simple conversion allows you to migrate your network to fibre optics without replacing the existing (copper) connections.
  • Significant extension of LAN distance. Ethernet copper connections, in particular, are very limited when it comes to data transmission. By converting from Ethernet to fibre optics, you can easily achieve a distance of around 80 km – or even more.
  • Straightforward speed conversion
  • Verbesserung der Datenübertragung. Improved data transmission. As copper-based connections are susceptible to electromagnetic interference, transmission via fibre optic cable offers protection against noise and improves transmission quality.

Types of media converters

Various types of media converters are available, each suited to different applications. Two popular types are:

  • Standalone or rack-mounted media converters: Standalone models operate on AC or DC power and are used in point-to-point installations to convert copper connections to fibre optic connections. Rack-mounted converters are used in equipment rooms and data centres.
  • Managed or unmanaged media converters: The simple, unmanaged media converters are easy to install (plug and play), but offer only limited fault detection, monitoring and configuration. The managed converters are ideal for complete network control and can be easily monitored remotely by the administrator, whilst also allowing for remote troubleshooting.

Frequently asked questions

Thanks to the wide range of media converters available, virtually all types of network components can be connected using the appropriate interfaces. This enables networks to achieve fast, reliable data transmission over long distances. Media converters are therefore particularly useful in commercial business applications, for surveillance purposes (security cameras), in data centres and in defence and government applications.

These media converters are ideal for use in offices, data centres and any other rooms with a controlled ambient temperature. This allows you to improve an existing network within buildings by, for one thing, increasing its range.

It is used in extreme conditions (temperatures ranging from -40°C to 75°C) and extends the network’s range by converting data between twisted-pair cabling and multimode/single-mode fibre-optic cables.
