DIN Rail Switches

If you want to set up an industrial network, you will need a DIN-rail switch (compliant with DIN EN 60715:2018-07) or an industrial switch. DIN-rail switches are mounted on DIN rails.

These DIN-rail switches can withstand a wide temperature range and some feature redundant power inputs. Our high-quality DIN-rail switches each have at least one fiber-optic port (for SFP transceivers) and are available in both managed and unmanaged versions.

DIN rail switch with enhanced durability

Industrial switches are usually subject to specific operating conditions and must therefore meet a range of requirements:

  • Size: due to potentially limited space in control cabinets, a DIN rail switch must be as compact as possible.
  • Temperaturbereich / Abwärme: It must function safely and reliably even at higher temperatures and without ventilation.
  • Cooling: Depending on the installation, the switch must also be able to cope with dust and moisture and be cooled without a fan. Important: Always protect empty ports with a suitable dust cap.
  • Power supply: Industrial switches are designed for 24 V or 48 V and usually feature additional filters or enhanced surge protection.
  • Compatibility: Industrial switches must support common standards (connectors / transceivers)
  • Data transmission: The switches must be able to transmit large amounts of data quickly and securely.

DIN rail switches: managed and unmanaged

Switches are available in three variants and are generally offered as managed, smart managed or unmanaged switches. In industrial applications and for DIN rail switches, managed switches are generally preferred.

The features of the different switches:

  • Unmanaged switches: These have a fixed but limited configuration and can be easily installed using plug-and-play. They are inexpensive but do not offer any special security features. These switches are particularly ideal for meeting rooms and small networks.
  • Managed switches: These are the optimal solution for large and professional industrial networks. They offer comprehensive features and a high level of security. With these managed switches, networks can be managed remotely and faults can be rectified. They are used in large companies and data centres. If you are looking for a DIN-rail switch for industrial use, you should opt for a managed switch.
  • Smart managed switches: This type is managed via a web browser and is intuitive to maintain. Data traffic can be configured, monitored and maintained remotely. This cost-effective option offers good security but has limited functions, making these switches mainly suitable for smaller applications.

Our DIN-rail switches

The switches we offer provide versatile connectivity to new and existing networks and support both fibre-optic and copper connections. They can also convert between different connection types. We offer these devices in various configurations, including models with PoE power supply and/or alarm outputs.

The fibre optic ports are designed as SFP slots, so that by selecting the appropriate SFP module, you can connect any standard fibre type and various wavelengths.

Many of the switches we offer are suitable for DIN rail mounting.

Frequently asked questions

A DIN rail, or mounting rail, is usually made from a sheet metal profile (steel or aluminium alloy) and is used in electrical engineering to mount various components, such as relays, in different distribution boxes or control cabinets. These rails are standardised in accordance with DIN EN 60715:2018-07 (‘Standardised mounting rails for the mechanical fixing of electrical equipment in switchgear’).

The permissible operating temperature range for our DIN-rail switches is approximately -40°C to +75°C. The storage temperature range is usually the same or even slightly higher (e.g. 85°C for the IGS-20160HPT). Please ensure that the switches are stored in their original packaging and that the temperature ranges are not exceeded or fallen short of, as this may damage or destroy the switches.

These terms originate from the so-called OSI model, which explains the seven layers of network communication. These are: data link, security, network, transport, session, presentation and application. A Layer 2 switch is a type of basic device that simply forwards data based on MAC addresses. A Layer 3 switch can also forward data, but additionally performs routing tasks and takes the devices’ IP addresses into account.
